Let’s Travel: Maine.

September 11, 2012 by Katie

Next week, we’re off on vacation! We’ve traveled a bunch, but this is a milestone–our first vacation together in America. AND our last vacation before we have the baby. Originally we were planning to go to Iceland, but flights went up and so we decided to stay a little closer to home. So, Maine it is!

We’re planning on driving up the coast visiting places like York, Ogunquit and Portland. And, then we’ll end up in Acadia National Park near Bar Harbor.

Of course, since this trip doesn’t require any visas or international travel, we haven’t planned a thing. We have hotels booked for 3 nights (so roughly half the trip), but haven’t even decided when we’re leaving. We don’t really know what we’re doing and we haven’t booked a rental car (we live in the city and parking is a nightmare, so we just rent when we need one).

Has anyone been to Maine? Where should we go? What do we need to see? Any tips on car travel when you’re pregnant?

  1. You are really making this New Englander, who now lives in Florida, miss fall. The leaves and cooler weather, so wonderful!

Please enjoy all that cold water seafood.

  2. Dave LOVED Maine when he went on a fishing trip several years back. He was also on the not-much-planned path and commented that you can’t go wrong letting yourself get lost on a road or a trail in Maine… (being the type A that I am… can’t imagine diving into an unplanned road trip – I’d go nuts! But more power to you!!)

Car travel when you’re pregnant… stop to walk and stretch more than you think you need to so that you aren’t feeling unexpected aches and pains the next day. When we’d trek from IA to OH with Ellie in my belly – I’d drink lots of fluids to make me stop and take those breaks – otherwise I would have driven on (to the appeasement of my then toddler). Also – pack some approved medication to help you overcome travel sickness. I never had it before I was pregnant, but all that changed with pregnancy. I’d keep Benadryl in my purse in case I started getting really nauseated so that I could sack out for a bit (or plan on doing most of the driving).

    Happy Travels :)

  3. Let’s talk about how jealous I am right now — you know I’ve been dying to go to Acadia! I can’t wait to pick your brain after you guys get back. Enjoy the babymoon to the fullest!

  4. Maine is my favorite state and vacation destination BY FAR. I’ve been there twice, and I loved it both times! My favorites were shopping in Freeport, cliff jumping at Smalls Falls, checking out lighthouses on the coast and Acadia National Park. If you like lobster then you definitely have to try that, too!

(Iceland is awesome, too, so I hope you are able to make it there sometime!)

    P.S. Congrats on that baby!

  5. There isn’t much I wouldn’t do right now to escape this hot, stale Orlando weather. Have a blast and I’ll try to contain my jealousy!
