Whatever Happened to Running?

September 4, 2012 by Carolina

Have you noticed I haven’t mentioned running for a while here on The Peas? Since the Iron Girl Half Marathon back in April to be exact — I haven’t ran more than 3 miles since. That’s almost 5 months of very little running, which is very unlike me since I picked up running a few years ago. So whatever happened to running?

For starters, since I injured my knee at the ING NYC Marathon last November running for me wasn’t the same: knee pain became the norm in every run after it. I talked to my doctor & he suggested I take it easy for a while, do a lot of stretching & lay off the leg, which explains what I’ve been doing since I hug my running sneakers…

Yoga! You all know I’ve doing doing tons of yoga lately & really have enjoyed it. I’m feeling relaxed & centered, it’s been absolutely amazing. I’ve gotten into a nice routine of practicing at least 4 times a week & I’m loving every minute of it. Today, as I layed on the mat & enjoyed the cooler breeze from outside (hot yoga instructor opens the door at the end of practice to let cool air in) it hit me: I miss running. I miss my feet hitting the pavement, being outside & enjoying the view as I crank out the miles…it’s time to incorporate my first love back into my life.

My doctor has told me my knee is good to go & I shouldn’t experience any major problems, so all systems are go. I’m registered for the ING Miami Half Marathon in January & am toying with the idea of running the OUC Half Marathon with friends (like Hemarie). Now here comes the suckiest part of running: Getting into the groove again & building mileage. Running’s not forgiving when you leave it for a while, coming back can be exhausting & hard at first but I know what to do. I have a training schedule made up & now just have to select my first official training day. If I run the OUC Half Marathon I need to start running next week, if not I will begin running the first week of October for the ING Miami Half Marathon.

That said, I’ve told myself that if my knee starts acting up again these will be my last long distance races. Fingers crossed running & I make friends & I stay healthy this running season!

Are you running any races? Any tips for me as I get back into the running swing of things?

  1. You are SO right – running is not forgiving in the slightest! I was training for Miracle Miles but fell off the wagon this last month. I may see if I can drop down to the 5k option for that, since 9.3 sounds scary as hell right now. Getting back into the swing of things is tough, but I think the only way to start is just getting out there! Let me know if you ever want a running buddy when you’re not looking forward to a run!

  2. You know I feel you on the running! You should definitely sign up for OUC (or as it’s now called the Orlando Half Marathon) — we can race together!

  3. Tip #1: Do some training runs with Hemarie! :)

In all serious, I think you got it: listen to your body + hydrate + stretch + strength train.

I don’t want to fork over the marathonfest group training money mid-season so I’m doing Saturday long runs on my own. I would *love* some running dates with you!

Here’s to some happy running for both of us!

  4. You should so run OUC. I have never run it and was planning on it this year.

I think it is really smart to take it easy on your knee, you don’t want to cause any permanent damage.

  5. So many of you ladies are running the OUC I may just have to do it!
