I’m a little late to jump on “the lets try Crossfit” train but I’ve finally arrived…sorta. My best friend back home (Hi Marcela!) is really into Crossfit, so is my very talented friend Michael (he’s a videographer & for hire. Call him up!) — I hear about Crossfit a lot. Part of me has been terrified of it; it sounded so intense! Flip a 400 pound tire? Sounds crazy right? It’s actually A LOT of fun, as I discovered this week in my first Crossfit workout ever.
Michael was kind enough to set up Crossfit stations in the backyard for us three ladies (Hi Kacie & Theresa!) to conquer. Here’s what he coached us through —
- 10 minute stretching warmup
- 400m run (Note to self: Don’t run 3 miles prior to Crossfit, your legs won’t like it)
- Four stations, Tabata style (intervals): 30 seconds on, 20 seconds off. We did three rounds of the four stations:
- Team Tire Flip – 400 lbs (Deadlift, Hand grip, Biceps & Shoulders)
- Team Tire Step Ups or Jumps – 24″
- Hammer Strikes – 8lbs (shoulders, arms, abs, grip)
- Burpees – Bodyweight (full body)
- Medicine Ball Slams – 12lbs (full body)
- 400m run
- Cooldown, stretch
Though we did not work out for a long period of time (one of the many advantages of Crossfit) it was intense; I felt like puking several times — it is no joke. The exercises are intense, working your whole body, using muscles you may not have been aware you have. That being said, you feel like a bad ass when you’re done! It’s one of the most empowering exercise sessions I’ve had in a while. It hurts so good!
I’m excited to incorporate Crossfit into my exercise regiment, I think it’ll help to significantly my overall physique & running ability by making me stronger. Coach Michael (that’s what we’re calling Michael now) has agreed to walk us through routines once a week for now as we venture into the world of Crossfit. I’m excited!
